The ten research based features of the Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy model are outlined below:
1. A Framework for Literacy that includes a balanced literacy approach with explicit instruction in the essential components of a K-5 reading program: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and the writing process.
2. Coaching and Mentoring Sessions that emphasize apprenticeship techniques for supporting teachers in implementing a literacy curriculum.
3. Model Classrooms that are implemented at each grade level and used as literacy learning labs.
4. High Standards that are based on the International Reading Association (IRA) Standards for Literacy, Indiana State Standards and the National Primary Standards in Reading and Writing .
5. Accountability for student progress that includes school reports, assessment walls, reading and writing assessment graphs, ongoing formative assessment, progress monitoring and summative assessments.
6. System Interventions that includes Reading Recovery for the lowest-achieving students and high quality small group instruction for K-6 students who need extra help in targeted areas.
7. Professional Development that includes explicit training in literacy components and bi-monthly team meetings that focus on teaching and learning issues.
8. Well-designed Literacy Plan that includes short and long-term goals, a three-year timeline and bench mark indicators for monitoring progress along the way.
9. Technology that includes networking opportunities for working together in program development across sites.
10. Spotlighting schools that are achieving high results, including school visits, presentations, research articles, and news releases. |
